Indian cinema superstar Prabhas continues to dominate both global theaters and streaming platforms, with his 2023 movie “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” reaching remarkable heights on Netflix just ahead of the much-anticipated release of his big-budget epic “Kalki 2898 AD.”

Summary:

  • Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire achieves Netflix hit status, claiming the No. 3 spot on the Top 10 Non-English Movies chart.
  • The movie’s success in theaters and on streaming platforms bodes well for Prabhas’ upcoming release, Kalki 2898 AD.
  • Recent triumphs in the Indian box office hint at the potential for Kalki 2898 AD to exceed expectations.

Prabhas, in his role as Salaar in Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, has not only secured a place in the record books but has now become a streaming sensation. The Telugu-language film, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, immerses viewers in a gripping tale set in the fictional dystopian city of Khansaar, where a tribesman and a prince find themselves entangled in a coup d’état.

Debuting with the highest single-day gross of any Indian movie in 2023, Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire ascended to become the fourth highest-grossing Indian release of the year and the eleventh highest of all time.

Netflix’s Top 10 Non-English Movies for the week of January 15 through January 21 witnessed the movie claiming the third spot, boasting 1.6 million viewers and accumulating a total of 4.7 million viewing hours. Notably, the film trailed behind the German action movie 60 Minutes and the hit J.A. Bayona survival thriller Society of the Snow.

As the success of Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire echoes globally, it sets the stage for the release of Prabhas’ next colossal venture, Kalki 2898 AD, scheduled for May 2024. However, the real question remains: Can Kalki 2898 AD replicate the triumph of its predecessor?

The stakes are high for Kalki 2898 AD as India’s most expensive movie to date, with a staggering production budget of approximately $75 million. The film would need to be a record-breaking success, grossing around $150 million, just to break even. To put this into perspective, only five Indian movies have crossed that mark at the worldwide box office, with Prabhas’ earlier film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion being the only one to surpass the lofty break-even point.

The worldwide success of recent Indian releases, such as RRR and KGF: Chapter 2, suggests a growing global appetite for Indian cinema. Additionally, Kalki 2898 AD‘s international promotion at Comic-Con’s Hall H has elevated its anticipation to unprecedented levels, making it the first Indian movie to achieve such recognition.

As the countdown to Kalki 2898 AD intensifies, all eyes are on Prabhas and the potential for another historic achievement in Indian cinema. Will Kalki 2898 AD follow in the footsteps of Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and become the next record-breaking success on both domestic and international fronts? Only time will tell in this cinematic journey of epic proportions.
